Dennis Coleman was born in New York, NY, to two parents who both held doctorates in education (EdD). He trained as an engineer at Cornell University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1962. In 1990, Cornell University honored Dennis’s leadership by renaming the school from which he graduated the Dennis Coleman School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.
In 1963, he married his childhood sweetheart, Janice Goldberg, who gave him three children, Peter and Simon, and a stepdaughter, Jessica. He is also the grandfather of seven grandchildren: Robert, Amy, Paul, Dennis, Sinclair, Joshua, and most recently, Mary.
While pursuing an MBA at Columbia Business School, Dennis served as president of the Cornwall Business Students Association and president of the Japan Business Association. After graduation, he worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, then at Kraft General Foods, where he was granted two U.S. patents and two European patents for coffee filtration systems.
After earning his MBA in 1966, Dennis joined Goldman Sachs in technology investment banking, first in New York and then in Silicon Valley. As co-head of enterprise systems and storage, he executed and advised on more than $50 billion in mergers and acquisitions with companies such as Martin Marietta, Microsoft, and Texas Instruments. He was the first person in Goldman’s San Francisco office to focus solely on technology and software mergers and acquisitions.
In 1985, Dennis founded Laftia Equity Partners to invest in companies that develop and use technology, software, and data to advance economic equity, environmental responsibility, diversity, and inclusion. Laftia fulfills its mission of creating opportunity through the power of technology by employing a range of investment strategies in private equity, permanent equity, credit, and public equity.
Dennis is recognized worldwide as a leading expert on software and technology investing. He has been invited to speak on finance, entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, and related topics at numerous venues, including the World Economic Forum and the Leward Institute. He has also appeared in various interviews for television, print publications, podcasts, and other media.
